Porcelain Veneers
One of the most popular and well known cosmetic dentistry treatments is porcelain veneers. These can completely revitalise your smile and make you confident to smile! Porcelain veneers are great for hiding crooked, gappy, worn or broken teeth. They are great and produce amazing instant results.

Porcelain Crowns or Dental Crowns
Similar to porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns are often used to protect or rebuild damaged or worn teeth. Porcelain bridges tend to be used where cosmetics is important. Porcelain bridges are more aesthetic than standard bridges.

Dental Implants
Dental implants are another way of replacing teeth. With dental implants you can replace from one to all your teeth. Dental implants do not depend on abutment teeth unlike dental bridges, but you need to have a good jaw bone to support dental implants. Dental implants are very successful.

Orthodontics and Clear braces.
A very popular way to correct crooked or gappy teeth is braces or orthodontics. They are many types of braces available. Cosmetic Dentistry

by admin on January 23, 2010

The possibility for cosmetic dentistry began quite recently. Cosmetic dentistry is the oral treatment to improve dental health as well as to improve the facial appearance of a person.

With the increasing importance of media the number of celebrities opting for such treatments nowadays is widely known. Yet even for those of us who are not so much in the limelight, cosmetic dentistry can help someone considerably by adding to his or her confidence and self-esteem.

The makeover and reality shows on television have increased everyone’s awareness about what cosmetic dentistry is and how to access it.

Cosmetic dentistry has different categories for specific problems concerning the teeth. The main treatments in cosmetic dentistry involve, but are not limited to:

  • Teeth whitening

Otherwise known as tooth bleaching, tooth whitening is a quite common procedure today. Here, discoloured or stained teeth are brightened and are made to look whiter.

  • Veneers

Applying dental veneers is the procedure for transforming teeth that are worn out, crooked or damaged. Veneers are thin shells or laminates that are tooth coloured. They are attached to the front side of teeth to improve their appearance.

  • Crowns

Crowns are meant for teeth that are cracked or broken down. Crowns are applied right on top of the existing teeth, thus the name “crown”. Dental crowns increase the functionality of the weakened teeth by fortifying them. Crowns are made of either gold or porcelain. Tooth coloured porcelain is better for a natural appearance.

  • Contouring

Contouring is the procedure for correcting teeth that are crooked, chipped, cracked or overlapping. Contouring is the part of cosmetic dentistry that alters the length, shape or even position of the teeth.

  • Gum reshaping

Gum reshaping involves the reshaping of the tissue underlying bones to give the impression of symmetrical or longer teeth. The gum line is raised or sculpted here by removing the extra gum using a scalpel or laser device. Gum reshaping is mainly to remove gums that cover too much of the teeth making them look short.

  • Dental bridges

Applying dental bridges involves false teeth, also known as pontic, that are filled in the area where teeth are missing. In this category of cosmetic dentistry the false teeth is kept in place by the two crowns on the both sides of the false tooth. The dental bridges are necessary not just to improve the appearance but also to prevent gum diseases and reduce the strain on the neighbouring teeth.

Cosmetic dentistry is widely known to be quite expensive. However, the cost depends on a variety of factors:

  • Place where the dentistry is done
  • Materials used in the treatment
  • Experience and qualifications of the doctor

Another factor you need to take care of is that there are some procedures in cosmetic dentistry that are risky and need special attention and care. Hence, it is important to get your required dentistry done in a place of first-rate quality. After all, cosmetic dentistry is not simply a matter of dental health but is also concerned with appearance changes that can affect your confidence and relationships. Make sure that you take time to choose your cosmetic dentist carefully.

Our teeth go through a lot of wear and tear with the passage of time. Bad breathe, bleeding gum, and yellowing teeth are just a few example of common teeth problem.

A shinning bright smile makes us look better and healthier. Therefore, more and more people are becoming aware of cosmetic dentistry and teeth whitening products.

Dentistry has a specialized branch, which takes care of the look of the teeth known as cosmetic dentistry. It helps us to acquire sparkling smile and can correct major flaws that our teeth may have.

A cosmetic dentist’s first job is to ensure the health of your teeth. Only then he or she will proceed with the teeth whitening process.

Teeth whitening is a part of cosmetic dentistry. It eliminates the stains you get from smoking, drinking tea, coffee, cola, red wine, or from antibiotics. There are many teeth whitening products available over the counter.

Before going in for these ready-to-use products, it is important that you consult your dentist.

The most common teeth whitening products available are

1) Toothpaste: It is the most popular and commonly used teeth whitening product to keep teeth white. In terms of cosmetic dentistry it is not really teeth whitening product but, nonetheless, it helps in maintaining the teeth whiteness after a professional dentistry session.

2) Teeth whitening Gel: Another teeth whitening product used in cosmetic dentistry is white paste or gel, which is applied over the teeth.

A protective cover is put on the gums so that the peroxide present in the formulation does not harm the gums. The active ingredients of the gel break down to release oxygen. It penetrates the tooth enamel and whitens the teeth. This is also known as gel bleaching. This can done at home.

One can purchase the whole kit from the pharmacy. The gel is spread on a mouth tray and placed over the teeth. A number of companies manufacture this product. For example you can buy ‘35% Carbamide Peroxide teeth Whitening Kit’ from a shop for $29.95.

3) Laser Teeth Whitening Technique: In this teeth whitening product laser light or plasma arc light source is used to whiten the teeth. First, a gel is spread on the teeth similar to that of bleaching gel but a little thicker. Then the light is pointed over the gel.

The heat helps to breakdown the active ingredients. Then the gel penetrates the enamel and removes the stains. This is one-time procedure and teeth become visibly brighter after two to three exposures.

Though laser technique products are available in the shops like36% Carbamide Peroxide Blue Light Gel System that costs only $49.99, it is advisable to get the treatment done under the supervision of a cosmetic dentist. This procedure is costly but much safe.

In cosmetic dentistry there are other options like bonding and veneering where dentists put porcelain chips to hide the stains. You can choose any of the above products depending on your problems. Your dentist is the best person to guide you in this regard.
